For now, here's the staff picture from the camp website.
Look for me & Ray second row up towards the right end. See that "volcano" behind us? Conrad & Rach made that. I think it was around 6-7 feet tall & for banquet night on Friday they had a red light in the center of it with dry ice coming up from inside the volcano to look like steam. I must say it was really sweet, they did a great job with their week.
The theme was Lost like the tv show so orientation on Sunday began with a "plane wreck" - my voice recorded as a stewardess welcoming the campers to flight 777 on Horizon airlines. I also stood up there in a little stewardess getup we made in order to demonstrate where the exits were, how to use the oxygen mask, etc. I had props & everything but unfortunately when the clips we recorded were spliced together they accidentally left that part out so I ended up looking a little silly standing up there & then not having anything to do. :) The plane wreck happened with Daves' voice (the assistant director) as the captain & crashing noises, the lights going off, & LOST flashing up on the screen in front of us.
One of the girls at our church, who is an artist, created a map of camp except she made camp look like an island.
THe way these guys do their weeks is that the campers have a goal & are presented with clues & items to find & such throughout the week. The goal for the week was to find the item that would get them off the island (the campers didn't know what the item was but through the clues they discovered they had to dig in the sand volleyball pit & there they found a black box with a cell phone inside).
Dave did some skits such as running through the dining hall in his "wild man costume" grabbing food off of campers plates & shoving it into his mouth, all messy & running around. He gave us the clue before one of the staff girls came in as a hunter with Ray's shotgun & chased him away.
We also had a couple of night games, including one where about 15 of the staff hid around camp (I picked an area down in the woods) & the groups of campers & counselors had to find us (we were castaways on the island) so we could help them with their maps. I was down in the woods for about an hour, in the dark, being terribly eaten by mosquitoes.
I was so in character too. I whispered the whole time (only four groups of campers found me), I was dressed all in black, including a hoodie, & I had eyeliner smeared all over my face to look like dirt. Sometimes I would crouch along the trail & when the campers would come by & see me I'd get up & start walking away feeper into the woods whispering for them to "go away, leave me alone" & they would beg me for help. We could make them do stuff for us too - sing, dance - I just asked for bug spray (no one had any but at least one boy rubbed some off of his arm for me - thanks?).
One counselor told me that two of his BOY campers actually thought I was a hobo because I was walking away from them & away from camp & they were scared of me. I got a kick out of that one!
Anyway, that post ended up being a lot longer than I'd planned. I need to go workout. I haven't worked out in about two weeks. The good news is that I got to eat horrible food & a lot of it last week without putting on weight or excercising. I'm so active at camp & walking all over the place that I don't have to worry about it. Definitely a perk!
